Introducing the STM32U5 MCU

The latest Riverdi STM32 5″ Display module is built upon the newly introduced STM32U5 microcontroller by STMicroelectronics, which is powered by the Arm® Cortex®-M33. This microcontroller provides top-tier performance, unparalleled power efficiency, an integrated graphics accelerator, a variety of interfaces, and sophisticated security features. STMicroelectronics embedded in STM32U5 the NeoChrom GPU, a state-of-the-art graphics accelerator capable of handling sophisticated graphical interfaces, inclusive of screen rotation effects and intricate texture mapping. Furthermore, NeoChrom excels in optimizing animations, providing features like flips, spins, scaling, zooms, among others.

The demand for rich, smartphone-like graphics in contemporary embedded applications is high, and the innovative NeoChrom GPU from ST makes it feasible to amplify GUI features in applications that are both low-power and cost-efficient:

  • Simple & advanced drawing
  • 2D text copy
  • Alpha blending
  • Color format conversion
  • Scaling, rotation
  • Perspective correct texture mapping (mapping a 2D texture into a 3D surface)
  • Image format compression

The STM32U5A9 MCU equips developers to:

  • NeoChrom GPU amplifies the frame rate, facilitating the execution of complex UIs on MCUs,
  • Operate a comprehensive MPU-like graphical user interface on a simple microcontroller,
  • Maintain two frame buffers within the MCU (2.5 Mbytes of SRAM),
  • Work with small applications via 100- to 216-pin packages (LQFP 100, LQFP 144, BGA144 and more),
  • Safeguard user data with the assistance of an added encryption accelerator engine (AES, PKA, and OTFDEC).

Coming soon – LVGL Libraries will support riverdi displays

We will be introducing full support for our display modules for LVGL libraries.

Light and Versatile Graphics Library (LVGL) stands as one of the leading free, open-source graphics library for embedded systems, enabling the creation of visually stunning user interfaces (GUI) for any type of microcontroller unit (MCU), microprocessor unit (MPU), and display.

You can utilize SquareLine Studio, their user-friendly UI editor, to ease the development process with a drag and drop interface. Alternatively, you can engage their services to architect and implement your upcoming user interface.

Fully accessible on GitHub, endorsed by a vast community of developers, and backed by top-tier industry corporations.

  1. Widespread Acceptance: Conceived by over 300 developers and engaged by more than 100,000 users, LVGL is downloaded every minute. You can access it on numerous platforms including Arduino, PlatformIO, ESP32, MCUXpresso, Zephyr, NuttX, RT-Thread, ARM CMSIS-Pack, and more.
  2. Cross-Platform Flexibility: LVGL operates without any external dependencies and can be compiled for any vendor’s MCU or MPU and any (RT)OS. It supports a wide range of displays, from ePaper, OLED or TFT displays, to monitors.
  3. Efficient and Compact: LVGL operates requiring only 32kB RAM, 128 kB Flash, a frame buffer, and at minimum a buffer sized to 1/10 of the screen for rendering purposes.
  4. Versatile Bindings: LVGL is coded in C (C++ compatible) and offers bindings to MicroPython, PikaScript, JavaScript (in a React-like framework) and Berry. This diversity allows developers to work in the language they’re most comfortable with, without compromising on performance or functionality.
